Nine Year Old in Need of New Match After Donor Backs Out.

Sir' Terrence Mack (9yrs old) is battling nasal natural killer T cell lymphoma for the second time. This is a very rare disease for a child to have. In December 2011 he was scheduled to have a bone marrow transplant but his donor backed out. Now his mother is desperately searching for another match. Read more here

Harlem Hospital Promotes Collection of Life-Saving Umbilical Blood

Meighan embarked on an educational program set up by the hospital and Preserve Our Legacy, Inc., a group dedicated to raising awareness among minorities about the need for umbilical cord blood and bone marrow donations, that counsels women and their families from their first prenatal visit.
... Harlem Hospital officials believe the counseling component makes the P.O.L Umbilical Cord Blood Program at the obstetrics and gynecological clinic the first program of its kind in the country.

Basketball Tournament For The Awareness Of Bone Marrow Donations

PIX11's Dr. Steve spoke with four stars from the TV show The Wire about their celebrity basketball tournament taking place this weekend in Newark, New Jersey as to way to bring awareness about the importance of being a bone marrow donor. The tournament is in honor of a 10-year-old boy with the disease who is in desperate need for a match. Saturday June 11th 2011 marks the day that co-founder of leading UK Leukaemia charity, African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT), Beverley De-Gale, is awarded with an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the Queen's Birthday 2011 Honours List by the Prime Minister and Cabinet Secretary in recognition For services to Healthcare.

The list is published today recognising outstanding achievement and service across the whole of the United Kingdom. COLUMBIA - Four swabs on the inside of your cheek could save someone's life. The Mizzou Black Men's Initiative's "Swab Up & Be The Match" event.held a bone marrow registry drive Tuesday to gain more minority registry members. This is the second year of the bone marrow registry drive. LaGail Chism's granddaughter passed away in 1999 due to complications from leukemia. Chism is an account executive for "Be The Match" registry and co-founder of the Bria T. Chism Foundation. Watch Video Here

On February 9th BET dedicated it's Wild Out Wensday show to the need for more bone marrow donors. Featured on the show were Shana Melius from Preserve Our Legacy, INC along with 10 year old LJ who is in need of a bone marrow transplant and his mother Crystel Daniels. The show also featured Adam Mcfadden who was a donor and told how he saved the life of Lamar Adams who was also present. Click on the arrows to play each of the videos to see the show. this is one of the greatest media event in bone marrow awareness to the minority community.

 

Nordstrom Announces 2011 Black History Month Initiative

Nordstrom, Inc. announced today that it is recognizing Black History Month in 2011 by teaming up with Be The Match to help raise awareness of the critical need for more African American marrow and umbilical cord blood donors.
 
As part of its "Living Well" initiative, Nordstrom is giving people an easy way to learn more about becoming a bone marrow donor and helping increase the likelihood that patients in need of marrow and umbilical cord blood transplants can receive them.  Read More...

Daylen from Fort Worth has sickle cell anemia and has been admitted to the hospital 11 times in the first 18 months of his life. Now just 2yrs old doctors have determined that he needs a bone marrow transplant.  Because he does not have a matching sibling his parents are asking for people to join the registry.
Nyiah Young, age 7 was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia. In August of 2009, Nyiah suffered a stroke and diagnosed with Moya Moya Disease. To ultimately save her life, she needs a bone marrow transplant and  is now looking for a ‘matching’ donor on the Be The Match Registry.

Angelo Washington, is a Conway, South Carolina native that currently resides in Houston Texas. A retired US ARMY  veteran of over 20 years he enjoys sports, attending church and exercising.
